Braces are a great way to improve the look of your teeth and can help with alignment issues too. But if you have braces, you probably also have to deal with the frustration that comes with them. Some people may find that they get sore jaws and headaches as a result of the braces, and they may even start to lose out on other activities because of it. While there is no way to avoid getting braces, you can take steps to make them easier to handle.
Here are some of those steps
– Relax. This sounds obvious, but many people forget to relax when they are dealing with their braces tightening. But there are many things that you can do to prepare yourself for your braces tightening appointments, from easing your pain to remembering that pain is often an indicator that your braces aren’t really working!
– Take a warm shower. When your muscles begin to tighten, they can cause a lot of pain and discomfort. Salt water helps relieve that pain, and it also helps you relax. Braces tightening doesn’t always need to cause a lot of pain, so if your experience discomfort when your braces start to tighten, you might find a salt water shower will help relieve that.
– Eat right. While you should still eat healthy and nutritious food, sometimes you might find that your teeth or jaw hurt when you eat certain foods. Some of these foods include dairy products, citrus fruits and juices, tinned foods and salty crackers. If you find that you have trouble eating some of these foods after your braces tighten, or your pain is severe when your braces tightened, you should tell your orthodontist about what you can eat instead. It’s important to eat a healthy diet, but it’s just as important to eat foods that don’t hurt your teeth as much as they help your teeth feel better overall.
– Take it easy at your appointments. If you have to skip one or more of your appointments because your braces need tightening, you will be more likely to do it. Even people with the most incredible schedules and perfectionists have to sometimes miss their appointments. You may not always be able to make the same appointment two weeks in a row, and if you don’t have to, you should definitely make sure to keep rescheduling until you have time. You want to get your braces tightened as quickly as possible, but you don’t want to put yourself or your oral health at risk by ignoring your appointments.
– Relax at your appointments. Even though your doctor says that it’s best to avoid eating heavy foods at mealtime, you may find that you still need to eat some foods before your appointment. This doesn’t mean that you have to skip a meal; it means that you shouldn’t overeat immediately before the procedure. The more you let go of the pressure that you feel about having perfect teeth, the easier it will be for you to loosen up after your procedure. After all, you won’t be wearing braces for an hour or so.
